The Future of B2B Buying? Avatars in the Metaverse

Recently we looked at the opportunities possible with the Metaverse, noting that despite its relative infancy, savvy companies are already gearing up to go virtual.

As it turns out, buyers are ready to hit the Metaverse as well.

According to a report by Wunderman Thompson Commerce & Technology, more than two-thirds of B2B buyers—67%—are ready to do their buying via an avatar in the Metaverse. The reason? Buyers want a buying experience that brings together both physical and virtual interaction. That means CIOs need to start getting their technology ready for prime time in the Metaverse sooner rather than later.

The ability to get “hands-on” with a piece of technology without actually being in the same room is a very compelling idea for IT buyers, given the shifts in social norms and buying habits post-pandemic. It also signals the growing importance of omnichannel in today’s buying experience—71% of B2B buyers want to buy from companies that have both physical and online ordering platforms, according to the report.

An identical number of IT buyers want to purchase via their mobile devices more easily, another nod to the desire for omnichannel interaction. And it’s one that companies need to address quickly: Almost half of IT buyers (46%) are frustrated by the current B2B online buying process.

Clearly, customers are looking for easier and more convenient ways to buy from companies—including B2B tech companies. And what’s easier than strapping on a headset to check out the latest server offerings, when a real salesperson (in avatar form) can physically walk you through not just the bits and bytes but also the nuts and bolts of the technology?

As we noted in our earlier post, the Metaverse will undergo multiple iterations before it is the immersive, physical/virtual reality it is promised to be. But make no mistake: If you build it, they will come.

Take note, CIOs, and get your tech ready for the Metaverse.
